Deny Yourself by Lisa Chan - Review & Giveaway

Then Jesus said to his disciples,

In Lisa Chan's second video in the True Beauty: Finding Your Identity in Jesus series, she shared about the struggle to fight against our nature and deny ourselves to follow Christ. He asks us to lay down our lives to be His disciples. What does that look like in a world that is so self indulgent? How do we live out what Christ has called us to in the midst of a loud world?

Along with Lisa's teaching, Irene shares her story about her broken marriage. She had come to a place where she was considering divorce after many years of hurt, when her husband asked for her forgiveness. Irene admits that she struggled in this.

Jesus then spoke to her heart saying,

"Irene, I stretched out my arms like this and I took my last breath for you, but also for your husband. You want me to forgive you, but you're not willing to forgive."

This truth changed everything for her. This is just the beginning of Irene's story and how God is working in her marriage. I so loved hearing her heart.

Lisa relates some personal stories of moments that God asks her to surrender and how hard that was for her. She goes on to state that moving into that place of surrender actually brings joy and contentment. 

We live in a world that shouts "Do more. Be more. Have more." This is in opposition to God's way of things. We have to ask ourselves in we believe what He said when He asks us to deny ourselves.

so stop looking at things through your own lens.

This Is Our Time - Movie Review & Giveaway

Ethan, Luke, Alé, Ryder and Catherine are five friends connected by their strong faith. After graduating college, they each set out to make a difference in the world for God. Their ambitions are high, their passions are strong but will they have the courage to fulfill their calling regardless of what comes their way. This Is Our Time begins with five friends graduating college and moving on to find their places in the world wanting to make a difference. Luke and Ale marry right out of school and move to India to be missionaries for Embrace a Village. Catherine lands her dream job in finance and Ryder gets a job in social media. Ethan is struggling to find his purpose in life and feels left out.

Tragedy strikes and everything changes for all of them. The scene with Ethan and his father was heartbreaking. The friends wrestle with why God allowed something like this to happen and their beliefs are shaken to the core.

In the midst of the struggle, Ethan has a conversation with one of his college professors. He reminds Ethan that sometimes things don't make sense. That it isn't our time, but God's time. That we will have many questions along the way, but the most important question is - Who is God asking me to be?

Ethan gathers the friends together to deliver bracelets with messages and tells them that they have been called and that call never means easy. He reminds them that those in the Bible never had it easy, but were asked to be faithful and obedient to what God called them to do.

The friends begin to walk into their God-given purpose in a such a beautiful way. Making changes, having conversations, and ready to make a difference in the world.

"One day you think you have it all figured out and then you realize that there was something better because God is there. One day follows the next. Good times and bad times. Times where you dreams are on hold and times where they come true. Times where you feel alone and times where you feel love overwhelming. Times where you make sacrifices and times when you are overwhelmed by blessings because you're obedient and God is there. He takes all these times and He works in you. He works through you. Give it all to Him. This is His time."

The Action Bible - Review & Giveaway

I don't know who was more excited when I was asked to review The Action Bible - me or my guys. You would've thought that there was gold in the box when it arrived in the mail. I was surrounded by eager boys waiting to take a look at it.

The Story of David & Goliath

The Action Bible is a collection of over 200 stories from the Bible

done in graphic novel form in chronological order.

The Crucifixion of Jesus

What I love about this Bible is that it is specifically geared towards my sons. They are visual learners and it speaks to them through colorful and engaging pictures. I also love that it can be used in our family devotion time as a conversation starter.

The Action Bible is a huge hit in our house.

VeggieTales: The Little House That Stood - Review & Giveaway

My Thoughts

We are a VeggieTales loving family. 

All three of my boys have watched since they were tinies. I love how each story has a message and each one has prompted many a conversation in our home. So when I was asked to review the newest VeggieTales, I jumped at the chance. I sat down to watch it with my two youngest after school one day.

The Little House That Stood is a wonderful retelling of The Three Little Pigs. In Cabbageville, three builders compete to win the Builder of the Year Award. One builds a house out of straw, another out of sticks, and another out of brick. Sound familiar? Bob the Tomato remembers a conversation with his mentor Old Man Zucchini who tells him that building a house on a strong foundation is like building our lives on God's Word. That it will stand strong when troubles come. 

"Strong on the ground, you stick around."

I loved this story and the message shared.

There are also Silly Songs with Larry (which we love to sing along with) and a retelling of the story of Humpty Dumpty with a wonderful message of the importance of helping others. Loved that all the nursery rhyme characters like Goldilocks, Jack & Jill, and many more were part of this story.

My Zachary wanted you all to know that He loved the Humpty Dumpty story because it was all about helping others and "that's really important for every one to learn."

We also love to visit the VeggieTales website as there are all kinds of fun activities there. There are games, videos, coloring pages, and so much more. There is even an area for parents which has family discussion guides and activities.

What I'm Reading - Betrayal

A wounded soul could recognize another wounded soul.

Betrayal is a beautiful story of love, redemption, and grace. Both Julia and Hugh are wounded souls in search of healing. They have suffered betrayals that have hurt their hearts. Julia is a widow who was married to a man that injured her with his words and actions. Hugh was betrayed as a child by those who should have loved him most. This book is about forgiving those who have hurt you and moving on to all God has for you. It's about opening your heart again to love. I so enjoyed reading their story.

What I'm Watching - Abel's Field

My Thoughts

Our family loves to have movie nights together. 

I am constantly on the lookout for good movies with a great message. 

One reason is that I want them to be interested in the movie and another is that I want them to engage in a conversation about the movie afterwards.

This story of Seth and his sisters is both heart wrenching and heart warming. It was hard to watch Seth struggle to keep his family together, but sweet to see the love they share. The scene where Seth's sister asks, "Are we ok?" brought on the tears. In the midst of all the challenges God brought Able into Seth's life. Abel is a man who understands Seth and reminds him that he is never alone.

The tagline for the movie is 

Sometimes the heroes are on the sidelines.

This movie is about heroes.

Not about the heroes on the football field, 

but those who are heroes in their every day life.

Being Still in the Busy

Be still, and know that I am God!

As women today, we are busier than ever.
Our daily schedules are filled with so much - from taking care of our families to working outside the home - and we are trying so hard to be all things to all the people in our lives. We have become overwhelmed and stressed with all the things we have filling our days. It has become a challenge to find the time to be still in the busy.

In Lisa Chan's first video in the True Beauty: Finding Your Identity in Jesus series, she shares how we, as women, have lost sight of God in the midst of all the busy when He is inviting us to Be Still.

Through Lisa's teaching and Sarah's story, we are reminded how life-changing making time to sit and be quiet with the Lord can be for us. To open His Word. Sharing our hearts with Him and letting Him speak to our hearts.

In Luke 10 we hear the story of Jesus visiting Martha and Mary. Martha is busy preparing a meal while Mary sits at His feet. Martha is frustrated that Mary isn't helping her and Jesus speaks to her.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

We have access to the same Jesus everyday.
