What I'm Reading - Barefoot Summer

My Thoughts

Barefoot Summer is a beautiful story of two people finding their way back to God and falling in love in the process. They have both suffered great loss in their lives from Madison's brother's death to Beckett's alcoholic father. I fell in love with both of them from the very first swimming lesson when they both put their feet in the water. I wanted to shake them both several times along the way when there were misunderstandings. I was fully invested in what was happening. I was that person talking to the book along the way. I wanted their happily ever after for them.

I just loved reading how God brought them together and back to Him. And when it was over, I wanted to read more. That's when you know it's a fantastic story. When you are so caught up in it, that you will miss the people you have been reading about and I will definitely miss Madison and Beckett.
Pick up Barefoot Summer.
Meet Madison and Beckett.
You'll love them.

What I'm Reading - That Certain Summer

My Thoughts

That Certain Summer is the story of two sisters separated for many years by the comparisons made by their mother. This is the story of them finding their way back to each other and healing old wounds. I really loved their conversations along the way. They also managed to fall in love when they least expected it with wonderful men. Such a beautiful story.

You can purchase this book here:

About the Book

Karen and Val are family--yet they're anything but close. Karen has carried the burden of responsibility for her aging mother ever since her gorgeous sister left town years ago to pursue a career in theater. But Val had darker reasons for leaving town--as well as a secret to keep--and coming home has never been an option . . . until their mother suffers a stroke.

Reunited in their hometown, Karen and Val must grapple with their past mistakes, their relationship with each other, and their issues with a mother who is far from ideal. When a physical therapist raising his daughter alone and a handsome but hurting musician enter the picture, the summer takes on a whole new dimension. As their lives intersect and entwine, can each learn how to forgive, how to let go, and how to move on? And strengthened by the healing power of faith, might they also find the courage to love?

What I'm Reading - The Artist's Daughter

My Thoughts

When I read someone else's story I am always
looking for myself within their words on a page.
The more I read Alexandra's words, I found
myself identifying with so much of her story.

When she shares the struggle of having an absent father, I know that place.
When she shares the struggle of marriage and motherhood, I know that place.
When she shares the struggle of making new friends, I know that place.

She paints a picture with her words of places
that I know and she speaks to my heart.

I love her transparency throughout her writing as she shares her fears, doubts, and loneliness. But even more than that she speaks grace into these places. The hard places. The places we rarely share with others. She writes about her battle to figure out who she is in all of it only to find her identity in Him. She doesn't try to tie each part of her story up with a pretty bow, but shows how God works in everything.
Because sometimes those hard places stay hard. But God is there.

I love this book.
Really love it.
It is for daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, and friends.

What I'm Reading - When A Secret Kills

My Thoughts

Start out a book with an investigative reporter in hiding, a marriage proposal, and a car bomb exploding and I am totally hooked.

10 years earlier on her graduation night, Jillian witnessed a murder and even worse the murderer saw her. She ran and hid for all those years, but she has been found. She makes the decision to go back to her hometown and gather evidence against the murderer. There are complications including the fact that the murderer is the uncle of her high school sweetheart. Another complication is the child they had together, but he doesn't know about yet.

This is one of those books that had me on the edge of my seat and reading until I got to the conclusion. I loved this book and am looking forward to reading more from this author.

What I'm Reading - Her Restless Heart Women's Bible Study

My Thoughts

As a leader of a Bible study group for moms, I am constantly looking for studies that we might do in the future. One of the things I like about Her Restless Heart is that it covers topics that most women can identify with - restlessness, the longing for love and acceptance, and the desire for more. I also like that there is a companion fiction book of the same name. Through the characters and their stories shared both in the study and the novel, you learn more about God's love.

Each week is set up for five days and includes a scripture for the week and a short video segment. Each day of study includes a Bible reading, questions to reflect on and respond to, a daily prayer, and points to ponder throughout the day.

I also really liked that the author included several recipes in the back of the study. This would make a fun theme for a celebration at the end of the study.

You can purchase this book here:

About the Book

Her Restless Heart is the second study in the Faith and Fiction Bible study series that uses Christian fiction as a backdrop for exploring biblical themes. Just as Jesus used stories (parables) to teach important principles, inspirational fiction can open readers to greater understanding of themselves and spiritual themes.

Based on a novel of the same name by acclaimed Christian fiction author Barbara Cameron, this six-session Bible study explores the heart’s longing for love and acceptance and the Bible’s answer to this universal human need. The Participant Book has five daily readings per week, each including Scripture, reflections on the day’s topic with questions and space for writing responses, prayer, and a suggestion for the day—a question to ponder, Scripture to consider, or action to take.

Barbara Cameron is the author of more than 35 fiction and non-fiction books, three nationally televised movies, and is the winner of the first Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award. What I'm Reading - The Heiress of Winterwood

My Thoughts

What begins as an arrangement after a great loss becomes a story of love and new beginnings. This beautiful story of Amelia and Graham is a page turner for sure. I read it in an afternoon as I couldn't put it down. I loved Amelia's heart for a baby she helped welcome into the world and promised to take care of always. She was willing to lose everything including her family and reputation to love on this baby for life. When the baby was kidnapped, I was on the edge of my seat until she was found safe and sound. The surprise twist of all who were involved in the kidnapping was something I didn't see coming. I so enjoyed reading as Amelia and Graham came to fall in love. My only complaint is that I was left wanting to hear more of their story once I finished reading. I wanted to read about their wedding, more babies, and the rest of their lives together.

What I'm Reading - When Jesus Wept

My Thoughts

I have read quite a few books on the story of Martha and Mary, but When Jesus Wept is the first book I have read told from the perspective of Lazarus. His story begins a year after he had lost his wife and baby in childbirth. He is just emerging from his time of mourning and has yet to meet Jesus. When Jesus Wept is about Lazarus' friendship with Jesus and the many lessons he learns about faith and forgiveness along the way.

One of my favorite parts of the story is when Lazarus first sits down with Jesus after seeing Him baptized by John and hearing Him teach from a distance. Jesus begins the time together by asking Lazarus about his vineyards and listening to him. He then uses what Lazarus knows to share about being connected to the vine. I also really loved seeing Jesus teach and heal others through Lazarus' eyes. The moment he witnesses between Jesus and his sister, Mary, was beautiful.

When Jesus Wept is a captivating read and I adored it. I couldn't put
it down and it is one of those books that I will read over and over again.

When
Jesus Wept Thoene iPad Giveaawy

About the Book

Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus. When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by bestselling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament. Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have born some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more.

About the Authors

Bodie and Brock Thoene (pronounced Tay-nee) are bestselling authors of over sixty-five works of historical fiction. Their timeless classics have sold more than thirty-five million copies and won eight ECPA Gold Medallion Awards. The Thoenes have four grown children and eight grandchildren. They divide their time between Hawaii, London, and Nevada.

What I'm Reading - Tales of the Defended Ones

My Thoughts

Tales of the Defended Ones is the second book in Beth Guckenberger's Storyweaver series. I loved the first book in the series - Tales of the Not Forgotten and couldn't wait to read this one. Beth has written this collection of stories for children 8 years old and up with each story pointing to God and how we can see Him in the stories, even the hard ones to read. The children's stories shared are heartbreaking, yet filled with hope.

I love that Beth includes pictures, facts about the places where the children live, and insight into the culture where their stories begin. She also shares something to remember at the end of each story and a space to write down thoughts as well as snippets from her own journal.

Beth shares these stories of children to let others know that our stories are all interwoven and God is our Storyweaver. She invites us to hear how God is working in people's lives and to get involved. Not only are both books in the Storyweaver series great reading for individuals, but are fantastic to read together as a family.

What I'm Reading - Bread & Wine

My Thoughts

Many of the most sacred moments in my life, the ones in which I feel God's presence most profoundly, when I feel the goodness of the world most arrestingly, take place around the table. Something extraordinary happens when we slow down, open our homes, look into one another's faces, and listen to one another's stories around the table.

Bread & Wine is an invitation to join Shauna at the table. To this place where people come to eat, but holds so much more than just a meal. Delightfully written, she combines wonderful storytelling with some of her favorite recipes.

I can't imagine life without a table between us.

I so loved reading about the group of women she gathers around the table with - The Cooking Club. What began as a group coming together over a meal became a community of families doing life together.

I want my kids to taste and smell and experience the biggest possible world, because every bite of it, every taste and texture and flavor, is delicious.

I also loved reading about her adventures in traveling with her father which she is now experiencing with her own children. How she challenges them to learn and love differences along the way. How she encourages them to grab hold of life in every way possible.

Bread & Wine is a beautiful book that encouraged me to be a little braver in cooking and fed my soul with stories of the sacred space around the table.
I loved it and I know you will too.

What I'm Reading - Lead Your Family Like Jesus

My Thoughts

What I love about Lead Your Family Like Jesus is that it isn't another "how to" book that you can use to check things off of a list to be a better parent. Instead it is a book that invites you to learn more about Jesus and implement those lessons in your home with a servant heart like His. Each author writes from their experience as parents and all they have learned along the way.

I especially loved the chapter in which Tricia Goyer shared about her experience of getting overwhelmed by her every day schedule. She and her husband sat down to look at everything she was doing and came up with a plan. She assigned each activity with a number from 1 to 4. 1 being those things that she had to do. 2 being things that she should do. 3 being things that she enjoyed doing and helped her. 4 being things she was afraid to say no to or things she did to look good to others. She ended up cutting out all the 4s and even some of the 3s. Doing so enabled her to refocus and evaluate her heart in all she was doing.

I also loved that Tricia shared how she prays for her children.
She prays for their:

Head - that they will always lift their heads to look to the Lord and that they will allow God to life their heads when they are hurt or discouraged,
Shoulders - so they will learn to let God carry their burdens,
Knees - that they will get on their knees before God regularly, and
Toes - that a community of believers will surround them and keep them on their toes.

Love these messages from Tricia Goyer!
