The First - Eve

Adam named his wife Eve, because she
would become the mother of all the living.
Genesis 3:20

I am fascinated by Eve. Not so much about the whole "hey let's take a bite of this apple" part of her life, but by the fact that she was the first...not only the first woman, but also the very first wife and mother.

She was created as a woman, so she didn't have a childhood or teenage years. She was created as a wife, so she didn't have a time of dating or an actual wedding. She was the mother of all living and went through pregnancy and childbirth without a mother or any other female support. There weren't any how to be a better wife and mother books, no tv shows with advice on raising children and how to better communicate with your husband.

She depended on God completely. While she lived in Eden she had community with Him that we can't fully experience today. She talked with Him there. She lived with Him there. She knew great joy and no sadness in that sinless world.

Then with one bite all of that went away and she was cast out. Oh how she must have mourned that loss. Today we can't imagine what that loss must have been like for her since we only know what it has been like since "the fall." But even then she relied on God for strength and provision. She knew that He had blessed her with children. She was able to deal with the loss of her sons through Him. She still had a relationship with her Father.

She wasn't just the first woman, wife, and mother. She was also the first redeemed. Even though she sinned and suffered consequences for those sins, God loved her and forgave her. He made a blood sacrifice for her which would be the first glimpse we would see in the ultimate plan of the sacrifice of His Son for us many years later.

There is so much more to be learned from Eve.
More than the choice to sin.
The choice to rely on our Father.

How does Eve's story speak to you?

  1. I read Tosca Lee's (she co-write a lot of Ted Dekker) book about Eve... It is fiction of course but it sure made me think and ponder and I found some of it disturbing... Just think, Eve lived hundreds of years as well... She saw civilizations begin. According to the Dead Sea Scroll book called "The Book of Adam and Eve" (another fascinating read), Satan was constantly trying to kill them after the fall... Like you I do wonder about her and agree there is a lot more to learn from her.

  2. I've been known to say there's a reason God didn't make me Eve...I couldn't have done it! ;)

I forget to consider she never had a period of growing into the role I have today. She only had our Father to look up to...and that was enough. He was her confidante...her rock...her steadfast.

So, not much has changed. He's still the same. And He's all we need.

Wonderful write, friend! Thank you for making me see how blessed I am today...

  8. wow, i love how you made her so real and so beautiful. often, i think i inwardly blame her, but you made me realize she is my sister in Christ, and she had a lovely relationship with God, and how it must have crushed her to hurt him in that way... thank you wendy. appreciate you linking up with imperfect prose.

    1. So with you in the blaming her area as I grudgingly thanked her for cramps and painful childbirth many times. I just couldn't get out of my head how different her life had to be. She experienced great joy in being with Him in the garden that we will only fully experience in heaven. Oh how I long for that. To know that one choice took that away not only for herself but for generations. I just can't imagine the pain she experienced in that. Blessings friend!

  9. I've never given much thought about Eve other than her "sin". Thank you so much for opening my eyes to this. You also wrote so beautifully. I just came across your blog. I'm a new fan now.

  10. I also find Eve an interesting character, but I haven't thought so much about her apart from my identity with her sin. As I said in one of my devotions, "my teeth marks are on that piece of fruit."
But as I read what you wrote, I also thought about having one son who killed another and that son banished. She had a tough life and she was able to compare it with a perfect life. That would be incredibly hard. All of us now only have a vague understanding of perfection...and that vague understanding gives us a longing for something better. hmmmm
Thanks for this food for thought.

    1. "my teeth marks are on that piece of fruit" <---this is so true. Heading to find this devotion. I can't imagine how much her heart longed for that life that she gave up with just one bite. How she felt know that she didn't just separate herself from Him but the generations to come as well. So much to think on and learn from her. Blessings!

  11. I absolutely believe that there is more to Eve than being the in-road to sin, just like you have said, she relied on God for mercy too. Thanks a lot for sharing, do have a super blessed day!
