In a week I will be headed to Chicago for the very first Kidmin Conference hosted by Group. I am over the top excited to get together with others in Children's Ministry for this time of conversations and learning.
Several of my friends are speaking and I wanted to take this time to learn more about them and what they will be sharing at the conference.
Have you met Kenny Conley?
One of the things I love about Kenny is his passion to inspire, equip, and train Children's Ministry teams. Out of that passion the Illuminate Conference was born. Illuminate is an event completely focused and dedicated to pouring into volunteers.
Kenny is the NextGen Pastor at Gateway Church in Austin, Texas, where he oversees all ministry from birth through high school. Through blogging, tweeting, conference meetups, or just sending out the random email, he loves connecting with others in ministry, sharing ideas, and collaboratively working with others to uncover new thoughts or strategies.
Here are Kenny's answers to my 20 questions:
Rollercoaster or merry-go-round?
---Death defying roller coaster... no doubt.
---I have very messy handwriting. I don't hate it, but wish it was better. This is the most thought I've ever given to it.
What would your superpower be if you could choose one?
---Flying... or speed reading. Ha!
What is one of your favorite quotes?
---The path of least resistance is that which makes both rivers and men crooked.
What do you collect?
---Cokes from other countries.
What movie would your friends be surprised that you like?
---Moulin Rouge
What are your favorite smells?
---Hmmm, there was a white rain (Wal-Mart special) shampoo that was something like strawberry mango that I went crazy about.
Coffee or Tea?
---Neither. Gross. Root Beer any time.
What is the best thing you've ever eaten? (Where?)
---The Prime Rib at Morton's Steakhouse in Louisville, KY.
What are you listening to right now?
---Matt Kearney - Young Love
What career would you pursue in another life?
---Some kind of engineer.
What sound or noise to you love?
---The way everything sounds when around fresh snow (which I experience about once every 5 years now).
What sound or noise do you hate?
---Smoke detecters when the battery is low.
Mountains or Beach?
---Mountains. The taller the better.
What is your favorite fairy tale or childhood story?
---Never Ending Story.
What would you tell the 13 year old you?
---Don't eat the leftover crab!
What is your favorite cereal?
---Marshmallow Matey's.
What book are you reading now?
---I literally just finished the Checklist Manifesto. Will start the "E-Myth Revisited" tomorrow.
What was your favorite toy as a child?
---Remote controlled tank.
Where did you spend your last family vacation?
---Beach in FL... shamefully that was over a year ago. I blame it on the coming baby. :)
You can hear more from Kenny at his Half-Track called Leveraging Technology in Children’s Ministry at the conference. Here is a bit about what he will be sharing there.
Embrace your inner nerd! Get with the times and master the digital tools of the trade. Maximize social media, cloud computing, and mobile devices. Effective use of technology in your ministry broadens your impact and influence. Come prepared to expand your social media horizons and learn to open the doors of productivity, collaboration, and influence by making the most of all the Internet has to offer. While we're at it, we'll build custom technology strategies you can use right away. Pocket protectors not included!
He will also be leading a workshop called Get Organized! Systems, Processes, and More. Here is what he will be sharing there.
Whether you're an organizational ninja looking for new processes to add to your utility belt or an administrative nightmare seeking much-needed help, this workshop is for you. We'll discuss systems every ministry needs, learn how to create foolproof processes, and actually create real-life systems to meet your needs now. With the right systems, you'll work smarter, not harder!
Take some time to chat with Kenny at the conference. You won't have a hard time finding him in the crowd as he will probably be the tallest person there :) You can learn more about Kenny and from him on his blog and connect with him on Twitter.
