My Thoughts
I had the privilege of hearing Joel speak at the Orange Conference this year and was immediately taken with his passion for this idea that love is part of his leadership of others. I couldn't wait to read his book and hear more about it.
In this book he shares what that looks like for him and how it can be applied for everyone. It began for him with a feeling of wanting more than the status quo in business. He longed to combine the person he was at work with the person he was outside of work.
He shared that leadership is about the bottom line and:
- loving the people you work with
- making the community a better place
- feeling a sense of satisfaction at the end of every day
- leading employees who can't imagine working anywhere else
The seven principles (patient, kind, trusting, unselfish, truthful, forgiving, and dedicated) he shares in this book are based on this scripture in the Bible:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
One of the things he shared in this book that really impacted me is actually something his mother said to him.
"Every time you walk past someone, you have an opportunity to make their day better or make their day worse."
What if we all looked at each interaction, no matter how short, as an opportunity to make a deposit into a person's emotional bank account?
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who leads. Not just in business but anywhere. It will change how you lead.
About the Book
Before Joel Manby won the respect of America with his appearance on the CBS reality TV series Undercover Boss, he was a highly successful corporate executive. After the show aired, many of the 18 million viewers wrote to him about the profound impact of his servant leadership. How does a person achieve that level of success without arrogance or pride?
In Love Works, Joel Manby introduces us to the power of Christlike love in the workplace. After years of leading thousands of men and women, Manby has proven that leading with love is effective, even in a business environment. Manby challenges leaders to allow integrity and faith to guide leadership decisions, outlining seven time-proven principles that break down the natural walls within corporate cultures, empowering managers and employees, disarming difficulties, and cultivating an atmosphere that builds long-term success. Manby also leverages the undeniable truth that love builds healthy relationships at home---why not use the same behavior to build healthy relationships at work?
