Those Sisters

Those sisters...
Martha and Mary.
They have been on my mind today.
Sisters who loved Him much and welcomed Him often.
Each one so different.

Which one am I?

Most of my life I have been like Martha.
Distracted by the doing.
Missing out on the being.

The world clamors, "Do more! Be all that you can be!"
But our Father whispers, "Be still and know that I am God.”
Joanna Weaver

What I am most thankful for in those Martha moments is His grace.
That same grace He offers Martha when she comes to Him complaining
that Mary isn't working in the kitchen with her.

The Lord said to her,
“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details.
There is only one thing worth being concerned about.
Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:41-42

I am learning more and more each day to be like Mary.
One who just sits at His feet.

Which sister do you most identify with?

  1. Hi Wendy,
I was happy to see I linked up behind you at SDG...I was once more like Martha, but now that I have tasted the goodness of His presence, I am becoming more like Mary although I fight my natural Martha tendencies...blessings :)

    1. Thanks Dolly! I too fight those Martha tendencies. I am naturally a do-er, but am so loving the time I've been spending at His feet lately. Blessings!

  3. I am most definitely a Martha who soooo longs to be Mary. I need to learn to be a better Mary. (oh and I love the video you posted. I am a total Gaither fan...those videos just seem to invite God's presence in my home and my kids love them, too!)

  5. I used to think that I was more like Mary because I wasn't much of a Martha. I sat around & visited during parties - not serving! But a dear friend pointed out that it wasn't just sitting around that characterized Mary but being at the feet of Jesus and spending time with Him. Ouch! It is so much easier to get up & do...and now I struggle more with being a Martha....but at least it seems to be closer to Jesus than not being Mary or Martha!

  7. Let me say, I look forward to your posts. Your love for Jesus is lovely!
I can take on the characteristics of both sisters. Unfortunately, I tend to be more like Martha. May I be still and soak my Savior in today.
    Have a beautiful day! Xoxo

  10. Oh how much we need to be more like Mary, but most of us are like Martha. Sitting still, being quiet is not easy to do, especially for mothers. It is so important for it is in those quiet moments that God speaks to us. Thank you for sharing! We're neighbors at Mercy Ink today ;) Blessings! simplyhelpinghim.com

  12. Have you read Have a Mary Heart in a Martha World? It's a good one!! I am most happy in my Mary moments... I feel the joy and peace and freedom of God in my Mary moments... Yet, Martha has a strong pull too. It seems like the older I get and the closer to God I get, my Mary moments are higher priority.

Great post! Thanks for linking up with Into the Word this week. :)

  16. I am a Mary and a Martha. I think Martha has gotten a bad rap, quite frankly. Jesus didn't tell her NOT to work hard, NOT to give her best to her tasks. He asked her just to stop and enjoy His presence in that moment. I think that God gives us skills and abilities and gifts, so that we get busy and do what we He asked us to do to take care of our families, our neighbors, our church friends, our communities, and so on. That means that we need to get on our feet, and sometimes do the back-breaking hard work in soup kitchens, and mission fields, and hospice houses, and schoolyards, and so on ... I think we're expected to be both Mary and Martha at times. What do you think?

    1. Jennifer I do agree that to be more of one than the other isn't good. I think there has to be a healthy balance between the two for sure. We do have works to do that He has created us for, but I think all too often we forget those beautiful moments at His feet getting too caught up in the being busy. I have always been a do-er so being still is something He is teaching me more and more every day. Blessings friend.

  17. Enjoyed your thoughts on Martha and Mary. I have been thinking about the different ways members of my family are gifted. We each have something to offer to each other.

  19. I've never thought of Martha as being wrong. Being a servant and serving others is what being a Christian is all about but we also must sit at the masters feet to be sure. I also so admire Martha's faith - Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. - What faith that took so I hope I am a bit of both... Serving others, sitting at the Lord's feet and having such amazing faith.

    1. Oh I definitely don't think of Martha as wrong or being like her as something bad. I think that my problem lies in leaning way towards being busy doing that I don't make time for the being still. They were both such incredible women and there is so much to learn from both of them. Today I am learning to balance. Blessings!

  20. I think there's a little bit of both in all of us (or maybe a lot of both, lol). It's a great story to remind us of what really matters because isn't it so easy to get caught up in the doing? It truly is :)

  21. I've been thinking a lot about this recently also. I know I am more like Martha. And longing to be more like Mary!
